Prof Jonathan Redfern is Chair of Petroleum Geoscience at the University of Manchester, UK, with 30+ years industry and academic experience in Petroleum Geoscience. He has been instrumental in the development of the largest petroleum research / teaching centers in the UK, and as Head of the Basin Studies and Petroleum Geoscience Group, currently leads 12 academic staff, 6 PostDocs and 35+ PhDs. He is also Director for the internationally recognized Petroleum Geoscience MSc programme, with a cohort of 50+ students on the two streams, Exploration and Reservoir Development and Production. The group also developed and runs an undergraduate programme in Petroleum Engineering (with 45 students each year).
His research profile is dominantly applied, funded mainly by the oil industry and focused on clastic sedimentology, regional sedimentary basin analysis, regional stratigraphy, basin modeling, reservoir characterization and modeling and petroleum system analysis. He has published 45+ papers in leading journals, and supervised 18 PhDs to successful conclusion.
He established the North Africa Research Group (NARG) in 2000, and has attracted sponsorship to-date of over £3.5 million from a consortium of oil companies (currently Hess, Repsol, BP, Cairn, Kosmos and Chevron). The next 3-year phase has committed funding of £1.5 million. They are undertaking a large integrated research project in Morocco to evaluate the onshore and offshore petroleum systems, involving 11 PhDs, carried out in collaboration with ONHYM and Universities across Europe. Further studies are ongoing in Libya and Tunisia, and in 2017 a large regional project will be initiated in Senegal.
Prior to joining academia Prof Redfern worked for 12 years as an exploration / new ventures geologist for Fina in the Europe, S.E Asia and North Africa and latterly Chief Geologist for Hess in Indonesia. In addition to his academic duties, he currently consults and teaches courses globally through Hot Engineering.
He is a member of the AAPG (and is currently AAPG Europe Secretary for the 2016-19), PESGB and a Fellow of the Geological Society. He has been an Associate Editor of the AAPG Bulletin He is also on he editorial board of the Journal of Petroleum Geology.
